Modernizing the Future While Preserving the Past: Morrison Hall Elevator Upgrade

When it comes to elevator modernization, results matter—but so does the experience behind them. At Resolute Elevator, we believe every project is an opportunity to deliver safer, smarter, and more reliable vertical transportation while honoring the integrity of the buildings we serve. Our recent completion of the Morrison Hall traction elevator modernization at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a perfect example of that commitment in action.

A Landmark Building, Reimagined

Originally completed in 1965, Morrison Residence Hall—affectionately known as “Mo-Town”—has long been a cornerstone of campus life. Designed to house up to 1,000 students, it remains one of the university’s largest residence halls and now serves as the official home for second-year students, fostering a vibrant and connected community.

Modernizing a building with this kind of history requires more than just technical skill—it demands precision, planning, and respect for the structure’s legacy.

The Challenge: Aging Infrastructure

The building’s original elevators, installed by Otis Elevator Company in the late 1960s, had not undergone a full modernization in over two decades. With three traction elevators serving 10 landings and supporting daily traffic for hundreds of residents, reliability and performance were critical concerns.

Resolute Elevator stepped in to deliver a comprehensive upgrade designed to meet modern standards while minimizing disruption to campus life.

The Resolute Solution

From June 2025 through April 2026, our team executed a full-scale modernization that transformed the system from the inside out. The project included:

  • Installation of new high-performance machines
  • Advanced control systems for improved efficiency and reliability
  • Fully redesigned elevator cabs for enhanced rider experience
  • Updated hall fixtures for better accessibility and usability
  • Complete hoistway rewiring to ensure long-term safety and performance

Every element was engineered with longevity, safety, and user experience in mind—hallmarks of every Resolute Elevator project.

Leadership That Delivers

Great outcomes come from great people. This project was led in the field by Senior Mechanic Jackson Montgomery, whose leadership and technical expertise drove the project to success. His ability to manage complex details while mentoring team members reflects the culture we build at Resolute—one focused on growth, accountability, and excellence.

Under his guidance, apprentices Cam Smith and James Perkins advanced in their careers, reinforcing our commitment not just to projects, but to people.

Why It Matters

Elevator modernization isn’t just about replacing equipment—it’s about future-proofing buildings, improving safety, and delivering consistent performance for the people who rely on them every day. In a high-traffic residential setting like Morrison Hall, that impact is immediate and meaningful.

This project demonstrates what sets Resolute Elevator apart:
