NIMED - Durham Traction Elevator Modernization

Resolute Elevator is proud to announce the successful completion of the NIMED Durham Traction Elevator Modernization Project, marking an important milestone for a building deeply connected to Durham’s historic business community.

This modernization project restores reliable vertical transportation to a landmark structure while preserving an important piece of American economic history.

Historic Background of the NIMED Building

The National Institute of Minority Economic Development (NIMED), formerly known as the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, was founded in 1898 by seven African-American entrepreneurs.

Among the founders, John Merrick and Dr. Aaron Moore continued to build the company after its first year. In 1900, Moore’s nephew, Charles Clinton Spaulding, assumed leadership and guided the company through a period of remarkable expansion.

By 1910, the organization had grown into the largest African-American-owned business in the United States.

In 1921, the company constructed the current headquarters building in Durham as its second corporate home. At the time, the building stood as the second-tallest structure in Durham, symbolizing economic achievement and entrepreneurial progress during a transformative period in the city’s history.

Elevator Modernization Project Overview

The building’s original traction elevator, installed in the late 1960s by Otis Elevator Company, had remained largely unchanged since its initial installation.

The system services seven landings, operates at 150 feet per minute, and has a 2,000-pound capacity.

Resolute Elevator was first contacted in November 2024 to evaluate the elevator’s performance and determine the scope of work necessary to restore safe and reliable operation. After a detailed inspection and system analysis, a full traction elevator modernization was recommended to extend the life of the equipment and improve long-term reliability.

Modernization work officially began on September 9, 2025, and was successfully completed in early 2026.

Scope of Elevator Modernization

The project included the installation of:

  • A new traction machine

  • A new elevator controller

  • A completely new elevator cab

  • Modern hall fixtures and controls

  • New hoistway wiring throughout the system

These upgrades bring the elevator system up to modern operational standards while maintaining the functionality required for the historic structure.

Field Leadership and Team Recognition

The project was led in the field by Mechanic Dylan Jones, whose leadership and dedication played a critical role in the project’s success.

Throughout the modernization, Dylan demonstrated exceptional initiative and professionalism. He not only ensured the installation was completed with precision but also stepped into a strong project-management role during the process.

Dylan trained new apprentices, coordinated field activities, and maintained a constant focus on quality and safety. His commitment to excellence was evident when he conducted his own comprehensive inspection to verify that the installation met the highest standards.

Dylan, we are extremely proud of your dedication and performance on this project. Congratulations on an outstanding job.
